Travel planning
Tel Aviv to Jerusalem: train or private driver for your day
The useful comparison starts at your door and ends at the address you need to reach. Consider the train journey, the connections around it and what you want to do in Jerusalem before choosing your transport.
At a glance
- Compare the entire journey, including reaching the station and continuing to your Jerusalem address.
- A transfer, a day with several stops and a guided Jerusalem visit each need a different plan.
- Use the official planner for your travel date and keep the return arrangements alongside the outward journey.

In this guide
Start with your two exact addresses
Write down where you will leave from in Tel Aviv and where you need to arrive in Jerusalem. Include the building or hotel entrance and the time of any appointment. A journey to a meeting, a hotel move with suitcases and a day in the Old City each have different requirements. The addresses let you compare the complete trip and see what happens before and after the main journey.
Then decide what happens once you arrive. If you will remain in one area and return independently, a station-based journey may fit well. If you need several addresses, transport for relatives or a different hotel at the end, list those movements together. A clear destination and the rest of the day’s plans are more useful than comparing two city names in isolation.
Compare the options by the work they need to do

| Your day | Train planning | Private-driver planning |
|---|---|---|
| One destination with light luggage | Choose the station connections and onward route to the address. | Confirm one pickup and one final address. |
| Family hotel change | Plan how everyone and all bags move through each connection. | Include suitcases, child seats and reception at the next hotel. |
| Meetings at several addresses | Check the transport between appointments as well as between cities. | Send every address, meeting time and final destination. |
| A historical visit | Arrange the walking route and any guide from the arrival point. | Coordinate the guide, drop-off and collection with the transport. |
Compare convenience in terms that matter to your group: carrying bags, changing vehicles, finding an entrance and keeping the people together. A pair travelling lightly may make a different choice from a family with a stroller and several cases. If you want a combination, such as a train in one direction and a booked car in the other, write each leg clearly in the plan.
Choose the actual stations and travel date
Use the Israel Railways journey planner for the date, direction and departure station you intend to use. Jerusalem Yitzhak Navon is the station to identify when checking that arrival. Read the current journey result and service notices, and check the return separately. Save the station names and selected connections with the address you need to reach.[1][2]
For journeys to or from Jerusalem Yitzhak Navon, check the railway’s current voucher requirement as well as the timetable. Israel Railways currently requires a separate, train-specific voucher for each passenger alongside the travel ticket.[4]
Vouchers open 72 hours before departure through the journey planner and use phone verification. Keep the ticket and voucher available for station staff, and arrange the return journey separately.[4]
Leave time for the journey from your accommodation to the station and from the arrival station to your destination. Consider how the group will manage bags and any changes of transport. If someone needs help with station access, consult the railway’s current passenger information before deciding on the route. For an appointment, work backwards from the required arrival at the building, including the final connection.
Check Friday, Saturday evening and holiday journeys for the exact date in the official planner. Keep a second workable option if the return time is flexible or depends on a visit finishing. Share the plan with the person meeting you in Jerusalem so they know which station or address to expect. Confirm any private connecting journey as its own part of the day.
Choose a transfer or a vehicle for the day
A private transfer connects the agreed pickup with the destination. A day involving several stops needs the route, service period and meeting points agreed together. Tell RT Tours whether you are going straight to a hotel, attending appointments or visiting Jerusalem before returning. Include any stop at another address and the location where the day ends, even if it differs from the pickup.
RT Tours can coordinate the vehicle, licensed guiding and concierge requests through one team. Drivers handle the journeys and collection points; licensed guides lead historical visits. If you want to understand the Old City with a guide, include the language, interests and desired walking pace in the same request. If you have already arranged a guide, share the meeting point and the plan they have prepared.
Give the Jerusalem walking section its own plan
Decide where the walking visit begins, what you want to see and where it finishes. Ask about steps, surfaces, standing and places to pause along the chosen route. Select a shorter option for anyone who wants less time on foot. Share both versions with the guide and transport team so the final collection works for the group that is actually completing the walk.
For a focused visit near Jaffa Gate, the Tower of David publishes accessible exhibition galleries and contact details for arranging the visit. Check the chosen entrance and the approach from your arrival point. You can build the day around the museum and a meal, then choose a further walking section if that suits your interests and energy.[3]
Save the pickup instructions before starting the visit. Agree who will update the driver if the group finishes earlier or later, and how everyone will find the meeting point. If some travellers continue independently while others return to Tel Aviv, decide where those plans separate and what happens to their bags.
Count the full group and its luggage
Send the total number of passengers, including anyone joining in Jerusalem and a guide who will ride in the vehicle. List large suitcases, cabin bags, a stroller and other bulky items. RT Tours uses Mercedes-Benz S-Class, V-Class and Sprinter vehicles, with up to 3, 7 and 16 passengers respectively, excluding the driver. Seating and loading are considered together for the actual booking.
For children, provide the details needed to confirm appropriate seats before the day. For a passenger using a mobility aid, describe the equipment and the assistance needed to enter the vehicle. If you are moving hotels, ask about access to the next room and where luggage will go before check-in. Include those requests with the transfer so the arrival is planned beyond the road journey.
Plan appointments and the return together
A work meeting, family meal or evening event should appear in the request with its time and exact address. Give the team the commitments that are fixed and the visits that can move. For meetings at several locations, include the contact who can communicate changes and the people joining each leg. Keep the final destination visible so the day has a clear ending.
If you will return by train, check the journey options for the period when you expect to leave and plan the connection to the station. If you will return with a driver, agree the collection point and how changes are handled. A later flight adds another destination and its own timing requirements, so send the flight details when the programme is being prepared.
Send a request that covers the whole day
- Travel date, pickup address and the first destination in Jerusalem.
- The time and address of any appointment or flight.
- All passengers, luggage, child seats and practical access needs.
- Stops during the day, guide language and walking preferences.
- Return destination and any hotel or concierge arrangements.
RT Tours has coordinated trips and transfers in Israel since 1996, with in-house Hebrew-, English- and Russian-speaking drivers. Our team can arrange one transfer, a day of driving or transport connected with a licensed guide. Tell us what you want to do and where you need to finish. We can connect the journeys and other requests in one plan.
Before departure, keep the final instructions with the person who is travelling. Include the addresses, contact and return arrangement, and send updated information through the agreed channel if an appointment changes. Whether you choose the train, a private driver or a combination, the useful result is a journey that fits the day from the first door to the last.
